I've pulled plugs at 30,000 miles that looked shot, and I've pulled iridium plugs out of a Honda at well over 100,000 miles that still looked usable. The real answer depends on what the plugs are made of, how your engine is built, and how you drive it. Let me walk you through it the way I'd explain it to a customer standing at my counter.

It Starts With the Metal, Not the Mileage

Spark plugs wear because the electrode tips slowly erode every time they fire — thousands of times per minute at highway speed. The metal used for the center electrode is what determines how slowly that erosion happens.

  • Copper/nickel plugs: These typically need changing between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, a much shorter interval than other spark plug types. Some sources put standard copper closer to 25,000-30,000 miles depending on the vehicle, but either way, they wear fastest.
  • Platinum plugs: One step up from copper, platinum plugs typically cost about two to three times as much but more than make up for it with longer durability. Single platinum plugs generally run in the 60,000-mile neighborhood.
  • Double platinum plugs: Built with precious metal on both electrodes, these often stretch to 80,000 miles or so, which is common on many older coil-and-distributor engines that fire the plug in both directions.
  • Iridium plugs: The ground electrode wears out first, and typically you can expect 50-80k miles on a traditional iridium plug. Replacement intervals for iridium plugs can stretch to 100,000 miles in many naturally aspirated engines.

Manufacturers themselves don't fully agree on the exact number for iridium — NGK gives them a life expectancy of 40-50k miles while Denso assigns a recommended replacement interval of 30k miles for some designs, which tells you that "iridium" isn't one single spec — there are long-life and standard-life versions.

Naturally Aspirated Four-Cylinders and V6s

These are the easiest on plugs. Steady combustion pressure and moderate heat let even mid-grade platinum or iridium plugs go the long haul, often reaching the top of their rated range if the engine is otherwise healthy — no oil leaking past worn valve seals, no coolant getting into the chamber.

Turbocharged and Supercharged Engines

Forced induction creates extra heat and pressure that wears down electrodes faster, so if you're driving a turbocharged engine, expect the lower end of the mileage ranges regardless of what plug material is installed. I tell customers with turbo Ecoboosts, WRXs, or turbo four-cylinder crossovers to plan on checking plugs a good 20-30% earlier than the "book" number for a naturally aspirated engine.

V8s and Engines With Hard-to-Reach Plugs

Some V8 and V6 layouts bury the rear-bank plugs under intake plumbing, which doesn't change how fast the plug itself wears, but it changes how big a deal the job is when the time comes. On these engines, a lot of shops (us included) recommend sticking closer to the factory interval rather than pushing it, simply because a stuck or seized plug in a hard-to-reach cylinder head can turn a routine job into a much bigger one. Stellantis's 5.7L HEMI, for example, uses two plugs per cylinder, which changes both the parts cost and the labor time.

Older Engines With Distributors or Spark Plug Wires

Really old vehicles use a distributor, distributor cap, and spark plug wires, while some later models eliminated the distributor but kept traditional wires, and newer vehicles use coil-on-plug ignition. If your car still has plug wires, those wires themselves degrade over time and can mimic bad-plug symptoms — misfires, rough idle, poor mileage — even when the plugs are fine. It's worth having both checked together.

Signs Your Spark Plugs Are Overdue — Don't Wait for the Manual

Mileage is a guideline, not a guarantee. I've seen plugs fail early because of an oil leak fouling the electrode, or a fuel system issue dumping too much raw gas into the cylinder. Watch for:

  • Rough idle or a noticeable shake at a stoplight
  • Hesitation or sluggishness when you press the gas
  • Harder starts, especially in cold weather
  • A drop in fuel economy that doesn't have another obvious cause
